Smart Safe Agriculture Demonstration Plot: A Living Laboratory for Local Farmers (SDG 2.5: University Access to Local Farmers and Food Producers, 2024)

Suan Dusit University (SDU) is dedicated to advancing its mission as a “University for Lifelong Learning and Sustainability” through the establishment of the Smart Safe Agriculture Demonstration Plot at its Suphan Buri Campus. This facility serves as a free-access learning and technology transfer center for local farmers and food producers, enabling them to gain hands-on experience in sustainable agricultural practices. The project is implemented under the “Smart Safe Agriculture Model City” initiative, led by SDU’s Research and Development Institute, in collaboration with Suphan Buri Province, the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), and other network partners.

The demonstration plot functions as a “Living Laboratory”, integrating scientific knowledge, technology, and agricultural innovation into real-world applications. Farmers, students, and the public are invited to participate in learning activities, including:

– Application of Smart Greenhouse technologies and Precision Irrigation Systems

– Training on safe crop cultivation and sustainable production management

– Development of value-added agricultural products for community enterprises

One ongoing example involves aloe vera cultivation, a resilient crop with high processing potential for value-added products such as alcohol-based hand sanitizers, facial cleansers, and herbal soaps. These products utilize locally sourced raw materials and are being developed in collaboration with community enterprises to support agro-industrial entrepreneurship.

This project exemplifies SDU’s commitment to serving as a knowledge and innovation hub that connects academic expertise with local agricultural practices—promoting Accessible Sustainable Agriculture and strengthening food security for surrounding communities.

Evidence of the project’s implementation—including reports, research summaries, and activity photos—is publicly available on the official SDU website, ensuring transparency and accountability, and reinforcing the university’s role as a model higher education institution in sustainable agriculture and food system development.
