Suan Dusit University (SDU) has long positioned itself as a neutral and safe academic platform that facilitates constructive dialogue among multiple sectors of society. By providing an open and inclusive space for discussion, the University strengthens the foundation of peace, justice, and effective institutions in alignment with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

A key example of this commitment was the event titled “Public Legal Education for Access to Justice,” organized by the School of Law and Politics, Suan Dusit University, in collaboration with the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, Ministry of Justice, on 27 January 2024. The event was held under the concept “Debt Relief and the Path to Social Justice: The 1st National Fair” and was presided over by Pol. Gen. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice.
The program featured a major policy forum on “Debt Problems and Legal Remedies,” which brought together diverse stakeholders from across sectors—including representatives from the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the Student Loan Fund (SLF), the Justice Fund Office, private legal experts, academic professionals, and members of the public. The forum provided a unique opportunity for participants with different roles and perspectives to engage in an open, evidence-based, and constructive dialogue on debt-related challenges and legal solutions in Thai society.

This event exemplified the role of a neutral and safe platform for public discourse, where various political and social actors could meet on equal footing to discuss critical issues without bias or political affiliation. Suan Dusit University acted as a facilitator and knowledge intermediary, ensuring that the discussions were guided by facts, legal principles, and respect for differing viewpoints. The setting encouraged free expression while maintaining civility and academic rigor, which are essential elements of sustainable governance and participatory democracy.
In addition to the policy dialogue, the program included legal education sessions that empowered citizens to understand their rights, access justice, and navigate the legal system effectively. Legal officers from the Ministry of Justice and SDU scholars delivered lectures on topics such as human rights protection, mediation processes, and legal assistance mechanisms. These sessions enhanced public awareness of individual rights and provided practical guidance for resolving debt and financial disputes lawfully and peacefully.

The event attracted more than 240 participants, including local residents, government officials, private sector representatives, and students. The atmosphere reflected inclusiveness, openness, and mutual learning—showing how universities can serve as trusted mediators between the state and the public. Importantly, SDU ensured transparency by publicly disseminating information about the event through official communication channels, including the University’s website (https://www.dusit.ac.th/home/2024/1212994.html), the School of Law and Politics page (https://slp.dusit.ac.th), and the Student Loan Fund official website (https://www.studentloan.or.th/en/event/1706495764).
By serving as a neutral platform for dialogue, Suan Dusit University reinforced its mission as a public academic institution dedicated to promoting inclusive justice and social harmony. The “Debt and Legal Remedy Forum” not only addressed immediate socio-economic challenges but also cultivated a culture of peaceful dialogue—one where government, private organizations, and citizens work together to develop fair and practical policy solutions.
In conclusion, this initiative illustrates how Suan Dusit University fulfills the intent of SDG 16.3.4 – Neutral Platform to Discuss Issues, by providing a safe, impartial, and inclusive environment for stakeholders from different sectors to discuss complex social challenges. The University’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and academic independence continues to contribute to building strong, just, and accountable institutions in Thailand, advancing the broader vision of peace, justice, and sustainable development.
