Enhancing Student Employability through Experiential Learning and Service-Oriented Education at Suan Dusit University

Suan Dusit University demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to enhancing student employability through structured, experiential, and service-oriented learning activities that prepare graduates for the dynamic demands of the tourism and hospitality industry. Through the integration of academic instruction, practical training, and alumni engagement, the University ensures that students acquire not only professional competencies but also essential life and service skills required for sustainable employment.

One key initiative reflecting this commitment is the student orientation and alumni engagement programme “Once THM, Always Family”, organised by the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The programme was designed to prepare students for the transition from academic life to professional careers by strengthening employability skills, career readiness, and a sense of professional identity. Alumni with successful careers in tourism and hospitality shared real-world experiences through the activity “THM Family Talk: From Memories to Success,” providing students with practical insights, career pathways, and motivation grounded in real industry contexts. In addition, students received guidance on academic documentation, recruitment processes, and career planning, supporting a smooth and informed transition into the labour market.

Complementing this initiative, Suan Dusit University also implemented “SDU Service for a Day,” an experiential learning activity embedded within the general education course “Suan Dusit Identity.” This activity emphasised service learning and hands-on practice as a core pedagogical approach to skills development. Students participated in integrated workshops focusing on food and beverage service, beverage creation, and customer-oriented practices, facilitated by academic staff from the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management in collaboration with student-led creative clubs. Through practical exercises such as beverage preparation, presentation, and service simulation, students developed key competencies including service mind, teamwork, creativity, attention to detail, and customer satisfaction management.

Both initiatives illustrate the University’s systematic approach to employability skills development, combining technical skills, soft skills, and professional attitudes. The learning design prioritised experiential learning, allowing students to translate theoretical knowledge into practice while fostering confidence, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities. These activities also strengthened students’ understanding of professional standards, workplace ethics, and service excellence, which are critical for long-term career sustainability in the tourism and service sectors.

At the institutional level, these initiatives reflect Suan Dusit University’s role in creating an enabling learning environment that supports lifelong learningwork readiness, and human capital development. By embedding employability-focused activities into both curricular and co-curricular frameworks, the University ensures that skills development is not treated as an isolated outcome but as an integral component of higher education. This approach contributes directly to improving graduate employability, aligning educational outcomes with labour market needs, and supporting inclusive and sustainable economic development.

In summary, the programmes “Once THM, Always Family” and “SDU Service for a Day” serve as clear direct evidenceof Suan Dusit University’s commitment to SDG 4.4.3. Through structured orientation, alumni engagement, experiential learning, and service-based education, the University actively equips students with relevant skills for employment, decent work, and professional growth in a rapidly evolving service economy.
